AntonioNeto - Abu Dhabi
11 February, 2011

open double quote I just came back from a magnificent week at Baan Orchid with my wife and 2 babies and we miss it already! It was perfect!

Arriving there after a very long all-night trip from Abu Dhabi felt like arriving in heaven. Our villa - Baan Orchid - was exactly what the doctor ordered. Just a few steps away from a fantastic beach with beautiful vegetation all around it wasn't long before an overall feeling of relaxation kicked in. The staff were just amazing and helped us settle in and made us feel right at home...

Pool-side massages in the afternoon, ice cold Singha beer in the fridge, elephant treking, monkey shows, boat trips, romantic restaurants, busy beaches/quiet beaches, etc It's all there...

I suggest renting a little car to explore the island as it's well worth it - if you have little ones that is, otherwise rent a little scooter and off you go.

The island is small and easy to get around. Wherever you turn off the main circular road will lead you to some beatiful hidden beach or fishing village - be adventurous!

When we left Samui we went to Phuket for another week but it simply doesn't compare!
Well worth it!  close double qoute

Koh Samui Big Buddha Temple

The impressive giant golden statue of Big Buddha is probably one of the most well known landmarks in Koh Samui. Visitors flock from around the world to pay respect to this 12 meter tall representation that also sits on a raised peninsula, giving visitors a fantastic view of Koh Phangan and the surrounding beaches.

Due to the positioning of the structure you can actually see it from some distance away which makes it an excellent landmark to get your bearings! The statue itself was built in 1972 and is reached by climbing a long staircase that has carved dragons flowing down. At the top there are several bells hanging surrounding the statue that you can gently ring and sound out your prayers to Lord Buddha.

Leaving your shoes at the base of the steps is expected so be careful on a hot day as you may find the steps a little warm to say the least! The base of the statue also has several different temples relating to different aspects of the Buddhist religion and as a visitor you can donate money and receive a water blessing from the monk. There are plenty of shops and restaurants to make this a charming day out and really do take your time in seeing all at this location.

You can even write your name or the name of a loved one on one of the bricks they are using to build the new roof on the temple. There is something rather calming in the knowledge that so many enlightened souls will be praying under your name! Before going to Big Buddha please be aware of your attire, as it is considered disrespectful to walk round without covering up. Girls should cover their arms and shoulders and no short skirts. Men should also avoid walking round without t-shirts or in shorts.

Getting to the temple is easy with many tour companies doing organized trips. Location wise it is situated about 1 kilometer from big Buddha beach on the northwest of the island.
