Phuket Aquarium
For those who love the underwater world, Phuket Aquarium is by far the most fascinating and interesting place to visit on the island. Some 300,000 visitors pass through the doors each year and given the location, based as far west on the island’s sinewy roads near to Cape Panwa, it is no surprise that one visit is never enough.
Overlooking the incredible Chalong Bay, where the cove from the open waters keeps the sea flat and calm as well as the most magical of colors, the journey is worth the trip in itself. There are English and Thai speaking guides who can show you around the venue, explaining each tremendous species of marine life or you can just wander around on your own. The eeriness of being on the sea floor, encapsulated in a glass cocoon without getting wet, is very odd but interesting.
There are over 150 animal and plant species on display such as shark, sting rays, snappers and Giant Groupers, who need their own 110-ton tank, it really is a fascinating jaunt into the deep blue abyss. Launching itself firmly into the 21st century, Phuket Aquarium is at the forefront of modern technology, with a multimedia theater, a deep sea exhibition and the Kid's Cave interactive playground. Suddenly, from under the glass protection, the aquarium opens out into separate tanks and a giant waterfall cascades, adding drama and real life sounds to the experience.
The aquarium also has a teaching center, where the guides explain and educate the visitors about marine life and how to help preserve the life that breathes no air. As the aquarium is popular with school children, educating the future generations about sustainable management of oceans and coastlines is a very worthwhile cause, and one which is put across in a fun and exciting manner.
Phuket's Aquarium is known as one of the most diverse and environmentally sympathetic aquariums in the world which continues to surprise its visitors with more new and entertaining features every year.
