Saphan Hin Phuket
Located at the end of Phuket Town, where land meets the sea, is the tranquil area of Saphan Hin. Over 100 years ago, the end of Phuket Town was not enough for the inhabitants and to help with the tin mining boom that was of that time, this piece of land was reclaimed from the sea.
Extra square footage on Phuket Island is always welcome and although it served as an important purpose for dredgers and large ships in days gone by, it is now home to sport facilities, an expansive park and as a memorial to Captain Edward Thomas Miles, an Australian who brought the first tin dredge to the island. A centralized monument is dedicated to the pioneering Australian, in the shape of an over sized drill-bit.
The quietness of the parks and roads, even though it is a popular attraction, offers a serenity which you don't expect. As you come to the end of the reclaimed land, the warm sea breeze is welcoming, although it lures you into a false sense of security from the sun's beating rays.
Locals use the park for picnics, kite-flying and exercising, and it offers visitors to Phuket the chance to see an extra delight the island has to offer. If soccer is your game, Saphan Hin plays host to the Southern Region League Division 2 matches where Phuket Town FC take on the likes of Trang, Krabi or Satun United.
The park at Saphan Hin is also where Phuket's large Muslim community congregates every May for the Halal Expo. It is here where amazing food, beverages and the community gather together to promote the Muslim culture.
The culturally diverse nature of Phuket, the fresh turquoise seas, the lush forests and its amazing history really entices you back to the tropically exotic island, time and time again. Saphan Hin the ideal place to observe a real slice of Thai life away from the run of the mill tourist attractions.
