Holidays in Thailand

Famous for its abundance of tropical fruits and a center of gems, the eastern province of Chanthaburi is blessed with rich, verdant forests and scenic waterfalls. The Chanthaburi River flowing through the town has been the home of many ancient communities.

Quaint fishing villages nestle along the pedestrian free beaches close to the town.

The province was occupied by the French during the early part of the 20th century; their influence can be seen in the architecture of many buildings in particular the largest Catholic cathedral in Thailand.

Cathedral of -The Immaculate Conception at Chanthaburi – built some 93 years ago (B.E.2449) by French builders during the time Chanthaburi was occupied by the French. The interior is intricate with stained glass and murals of Christian Gods.

Also called wat Mae Patisonthi Niramon, the most beautiful Catholic Church in Asia and located on the river banks of Chanthanimit Road.
Originally, the church had a tall roof but was taken down in World War II to make it less conspicuous and avoid becoming an enemy target.

Si Chan Road in Chanthaburi is the center of gem-trading in the province, local gem-mining is almost gone, Chanthaburi still remains a major trading center for stones from neighboring countries being bought and sold here.
Morning gem markets on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays attract large crowds of gem dealers and visitors alike.

Chanthaburi has to offer many natural attractions, Khao Wong a group of limestone hills standing in a circular cluster with cliffs and caves containing stalagmites and stalactites. Walking trails offering views of many variations of plant life – explore the caves but don’t forget your torch, visit the mining fields where sapphires, topaz and spinal rubies are found.

rathing Waterfalls located in 58sq kilometers of forest reserve rich in wildlife. The waterfall has many nature trails cutting through all 13 levels of the fall, clear ponds are abundant for swimming and a quick cooling down, camping is allowed in the park and accommodation for visitors.
Bookings must be made with the Forestry Department in Bangkok.

Khuk Khi Kai is an old prison house built to hold the Thais who were against the French occupation of Chanthaburi in 1893, the seven meter high, square shaped prison is built in bricks with each side measuring 4.40 meters. The walls were holed for ventilation, the porous roof is said to have been a chicken coup through which birds dropped their excrements.

Oasis Sea World with five Dolphin shows daily is nearby.

On the way to Chanthaburi some 175 kilometers from Pattaya stops can be made at Rubber, Pepper and Tapioca plantations many fruit orchards and fishing villages, another good stop is at:

Khao Chamao national park - where you will find a small museum. Waterfall of seven steps falling approximately 2600 meters through the Carp filled pools.
These Soro Brook carp prefer cool moving waters, at maturity can reach up to 60cm in length and 2kgs in weight feeding from plants, fruit and embryo of insects that drop into the water.
If eaten the meat of the Soro Carp causes an intoxication effect believed to come from the toxin of a species of fruit that the fish ingest.

Thailand holiday homes in association with Sentinel sports are developing a personalized package of sightseeing and adventure trips to this picturesque location – a minimum two day trip is recommended.
